Many of Telkom’s 512Kbps ADSL subscribers reported that their connections had been upgraded to 1Mbps last week (6 May 2011).<\/p>\n
MyBroadband ran a poll that day, and at the time 60% of DSL512 users indicated that their speed had been upgraded to 1 Mbps.
This is good news to 512Kbps ADSL users, but the lack of information created uncertainty and drew criticism from both consumers and industry players.<\/p>\n
Many consumers are keen to know during which period the upgrades are planned, whether 512Kbps ADSL connections in all areas will be upgraded, and whether the new higher speeds will be provided free of charge.<\/p>\n
Telkom’s communications department however remains mum on the upgrades, and ignored requests for information on these points.<\/p>\n
Telkom helpdesk to the rescue<\/strong><\/p>\n Telkom’s helpdesk was more helpful, and confirmed that Telkom has upgraded a group of 512Kbps ADSL lines to 1Mbps, adding that the upgrades form part of a trial by Telkom.<\/p>\n According to the helpdesk assistant, the lines which were upgraded were selected randomly, and some DSL512 subscribers’ lines may therefore not be upgraded at this stage.<\/p>\n It is further understood that an upgraded line will not be downgraded to 512Kbps in future, and that the upgrades are free of charge.<\/p>\n Telkom’s helpdesk could not confirm whether all DSL512 lines will be upgraded to 1Mbps in future, but indicated that it may well depend on the outcome of the trial.<\/p>\n Article courtesy of MyBroadband<\/a><\/p>\n
