Sony has slowly been rolling-out restoration of the PlayStation Network<\/a> (PSN), after nearly a month of downtime thanks to a hacking attack that saw 100 million user account details stolen.<\/p>\n

As a result, the first order of business for anyone wishing to get back online with the PSN is to download the mandatory PS3 firmware update and reset their existing PSN password. For a handy guide on how to do this, check out this MyGaming forum thread<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is of course a challenging process for Sony, and they are asking their users to bear with them while everything is brought back online. In fact the European region (and hence South Africa) experienced a period of downtime as Sony was trying to cope with server demand. “Please bear with us as we continue working on PSN restoration. We are experiencing extremely heavy traffic,” PlayStation EU said via Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As a result of this monumental PSN password reset task, some users may not be receiving an immediate response to their password reset requests. Nick Caplin, Sony’s Head of Communications for Europe has explained via the EU PlayStation Blog<\/a>: “With the huge number of people coming back online at the same time and resetting their passwords, it is creating significant e-mail traffic to ISPs. The consequence is that some of the ISPs are throttling the e-mails.”<\/p>\n

“We are currently trying to resolve this, but in the meantime please be patient and refrain from submitting multiple requests. You will receive your reset e-mail and be able to get back to enjoying your online gaming,” said Caplin.<\/p>\n

In a later update he added: “We’re currently experiencing an extremely heavy load of password resets, so we recently had to turn off services for approximately 30 minutes to clear the queue. If you’ve requested your password reset, please give it a bit of time to reach your e-mail.”<\/p>\n

Welcome Back program<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sony has previously promised a Welcome Back incentive<\/a> as a way of trying to make amends to all affected PSN users.<\/p>\n

Responding to queries on the EU PlayStation blog post – Play On – PSN Restoration Begins Now<\/a> – Caplin provided some details on the progress of this incentive. “You’ll be able to get your welcome back gifts once the store is live, which will be a little longer I’m afraid.”<\/p>\n

“Today [15 May 2011] is phase one of PSN coming back online, which includes features such as online gaming. The store will be part of phase two, which will be a little longer I’m afraid. As soon as we know when we can bring it back online, we will let you know here on the blog,” said Caplin.<\/p>\n
