Noire causing consoles to overheat

It all began when Rockstar posted a response to complaints of overheating on their forums, firmly pointing the finger at Sony for any PS3 overheating problems. “We have received some reports of PS3s overheating while playing L.A. Noire or beeping three times before shutting down/turning themselves off, mostly on older 60GB and 80GB fat models,” read the Rockstar support forum.

“Primary reports seem to be that updating to firmware 3.61 will cause PlayStations to overheat. There have been various reports of this on a few different games now, all reporting their PS3s turning off or “Red Lighting” after having installed 3.61. This can range from games randomly freezing to PS3s turning off anywhere between 30 mins use to 2 hours. We have confirmed locally that multiple games (Rockstar and non-Rockstar) overheat or freeze only when 3.61 is installed.”

Rockstar has since removed the page which contained the comments, but not before numerous gaming news websites (including Stick Twiddlers) chronicled it for the entire world to see.

Sony has responded to these remarks by stating to Edge Online that there is “no evidence to indicate firmware 3.61 is causing any issues with PS3s.” Making further comment to Edge, Sony has suggested that the problem also affects ‘other consoles’ (read Xbox 360) and cites Rockstar’s own FAQ as confirmation of this point.

“As with the release of any System Update, we will invariably see a very small number of users whose console has failed following updating their console, which is an unfortunate coincidence,” said Sony.

“Rockstar have now updated their FAQ on the matter, have admitted that it is a fault with their latest title LA Noire and have offered a workaround. It should also be noted that the issue with this title is not PS3 specific and is also affecting other consoles,” said Sony.

Rockstar has indeed updated their FAQ, and it does indeed suggest that both PS3’s and Xbox 360’s are being afflicted with overheating problems – they have posted up some workarounds while they tackle the problem.

It should be noted that this overheating issue only appears to be happening in a few rare cases.

If you are planning on picking up L.A. Noire when it launches tomorrow (20 May 2011), perhaps consider whether your console has enough airflow around it. Yes, it might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised by the number of people that think wedging their console between a shag carpet and their collection of MAD magazines is perfectly normal.

<a href="http://mygaming.co.za/forum/showthread.php/13570-L.A.-Noire-causes-consoles-to-overheat-Rockstar-Sony-respond" target="_self" title="L.A.
