These articles are meant to create lively debate, and the opinions expressed therein do not necessarily reflect those of MyGaming. Are you a decent writer with a cool idea for a column? Let us know in the comments section.

It’s that time of year again. The internet is abuzz with speculation, “leaks” and trailers of what to expect from the annual Call of Duty iteration. Weapon lists are being fastidiously compiled, fansite regulars are wetting themselves in anticipation, Battlefield 3 fanboys are sowing the seeds of doubt wherever they can, and legions of garden-variety trolls are poised to strike at the latest CoD-troversy (see wut I did thar), which should surface any day now. Perhaps communists will burn the American flag on the White House balcony, or perhaps a female lieutenant in a low-cut uniform will have a nip-slip that Fox News can jump all over.

The point is, people just can’t seem to get enough of Modern Warfare 3. Small news snippets one paragraph long are hotter than the surface of the sun on N4G. In the midst of all this, the question I find I’m asking myself is” why does everyone still care?

It’s like the whole gaming community has become a battered Activision housewife telling themselves that this time it’ll be different. He said he hasn’t had a drink in 11 months and we believe him! Of course, the quality of Call of Duty games has long since ceased to matter. They haven’t been worthy of their praise since the original Modern Warfare, which is still one of the best FPS games ever created.

While Modern Warfare games have certainly been of a slightly higher caliber than the “in-betweeners” we’ve had, both of them were created by Infinity Ward, a studio which has since been lobotomized after pretty much every essential staff member jumped ship. Well, hey, that’s not fair, they still have Robert Bowling.

Oh how I miss thee. Except that freakin’ impossible mission with the big wheel and the never-ending henchmen. Seriously, what the hell was that?

The strange thing about Modern Warfare 3’s attraction is that even the haters care. They’ll be devouring MW3 news like everyone else, even having a look at the weapon list (even if only to see how it measures up to Battlefield 3). Ironically, even I myself am writing about it. I think when something has so much money, so much hype and the biggest publisher in the world behind it, everyone is going to take notice. Unfortunately, for those same reasons, many will blindly buy the game amidst glowing (and probably unreliable) review scores.

Sadly, say what you will about Kotick, but he’s a very smart man. A smart man who knows that rushing out a Call of Duty title every November (just in time for the holiday season) for millions of dollars in profit makes good business sense. It does.

Personally, I’ve just lost interest. I was beyond excited for Modern Warfare 2 after the somewhat disappointing World at War, and was extremely disappointed with the result. It wasn’t necessarily bad – in the same way that the sequels to The Matrix weren’t necessarily bad. The magic just wasn’t there.

Maybe it would have been better without the albino Lenny Kravitzes. I don’t know. Damnit why did it suck so much?

The reason for the mediocre sequels since Modern Warfare is simple: you simply can’t create a flawless and fresh game in two years, and the November release date simply cannot be adjusted. This results in games that feel rushed, with PC versions having a console port feel, and every version having more bugs than a mummy’s tomb (the bad kind that eats you alive).

The developers this time around don’t exactly have me salivating – I’d be happier with Treyarch to be honest. We have a gutted Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer (who we don’t really know anything about), and Raven Software, whose recent creations are Singularity (meh) Wolfenstein (double meh) and X-Men: Origins (triple meh). The only thing, in my mind, Modern Warfare 3 has going for it is the Call of Duty name, but hasn’t that name worn itself out yet? Aren’t three mediocre games enough to stop riding the hype of one?

I don’t really concern myself with the rampant Battlefield 3 vs Modern Warfare 3 shenanigans, but I think this time around EA is going to draw blood – and I hope they do.

I hope Modern Warfare 3 is a flop, and not out of spite or because I have something against Activision (I don’t), but because as a gamer, I want the best. If we keep telling Activision that the reheated crap they’re serving for dinner is five star dining, we’re never going to get another taste of the gourmet cuisine they’re really capable of.

Is Modern Warfare 3 going to be THE BEST GAME EVER OMG!!@#!@!%!!@!!#@^%@~? Tell me I’m wrong in the forums, or comment below.

[20

post-11963","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-features
["GET
