Netlifx\u2019s comments follow the FPB\u2019s publication of new draft tariff regulations \u2013 which propose price increases for classifying films, series, and games.<\/p>\n
The FPB currently charges R795,000 for a \u201clicensing fee for online distribution\u201d. In February 2017, several online distributors\u00a0refused to pay the fee<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 including Microsoft and Netflix.<\/p>\n Under the new regulations, the FPB wants to charge online distributors\u00a0an annual fee per title<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on their platform. Netflix\u2019s 2,005 movies and 691 series would cost it R1,076,979.<\/p>\n Netflix doesn\u2019t believe the FPB has a right to regulate the Internet, and the content found on it.<\/p>\n However, Netflix said it does try to be a good player when it comes to local age restrictions \u2013 and as a rule it will comply with legitimate local regulations.<\/p>\n It will also attempt to work with local regulators to self-rate content.
