Rain Mobile will launch fast, affordable mobile data services in metropolitan areas in 2018, and aims to shift the way consumers think about mobile data in South Africa.<\/p>\n
This is according to Rain shareholder and director Michael Jordaan, who predicts that a reduction in the price of mobile data will be a big trend in 2018.<\/p>\n
His plans for Rain include getting users to stop thinking in megabytes, and start thinking in gigabytes.<\/p>\n
In the past year, Rain launched its new brand, designed its new LTE-A network, and rolled out 2,000 base stations across South Africa.<\/p>\n
On the back of these developments,\u00a0Rain Mobile launched an Alpha trial\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>in November \u2013 the first phase of testing of its LTE-A mobile network in metropolitan areas.<\/p>\n This runs alongside its existing fixed-LTE-A services which it offers through local ISPs.<\/p>\n Once the Rain Alpha test has been successfully concluded, the trial will be extended to a select group of users outside the Rain business.<\/p>\n As part of Rain\u2019s mobile plans,\u00a0Outsurance CEO Willem Roos<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will take up the position of Rain Mobile CEO on 31 December 2017.<\/p>\n Rain Mobile has a large benefit over traditional mobile operators, as it does not have to protect legacy income from voice.
