American retailer Gamestop has begun listing pre-order prices for Sony’s PS Vita games (aka the NGP, aka PSP2). Gamestop will honour these prices, and typically they won’t list product<\/a> if things aren’t confirmed for fear of the price going up. The games appear to be launching at a price of US$40 (±R270).<\/p>\n

It seems that Sony intends to directly compete with the Nintendo 3DS in terms of price. Their pricing for the WiFi-only model of the PS Vita is US$250 (±1,680), the same price point as the Nintendo 3DS in the US. The US$40 games are also priced the same as standard retail price Nintendo 3DS games in the US. We currently have no pricing information on the PS Vita for other regions.<\/p>\n

This gives us room to speculate on local pricing points of the PS Vita and its games. Of course, South Africa typically falls under the European region for gaming product distribution, so we need to take a look at their pricing models to get an idea of what our local pricing may be.<\/p>\n

Depending on where you shop in Europe and the grade of the title, 3DS games cost anywhere from €30 to €45 (±R295 to ±R395). Likewise with the UK pricing: £30 to £35 (±R330 to ±R386). The Nintedndo 3DS console sells for around €220 (±R2,160) or £180 (±R1,985).<\/p>\n

As is typically the case, one can see from these prices that the US market gets the cheaper deal on consoles and games. Furthermore, thanks to distribution logistics, import costs, our relatively distant geographic location, and fluctuations in the time-space continuum, the South African market often gets treated to prices higher than those in the EU region.<\/p>\n

This is the case with the 3DS, which retails for a standard price of R2,800. 3DS games usually hit shelves at a standard retail price of around R440.<\/p>\n

Extrapolating from all this, and assuming that Sony will follow a similar ‘price everything PS Vita to compete with the Nintendo 3DS’ strategy, we could see PS Vita games hitting our retail shelves at around the R400 mark, in line with current PSP game pricing, up to R450. The PS Vita Wi-Fi-only handheld itself might enter the market at a competitive R2,800.<\/p>\n

The PS Vita Wi-Fi + 3G model will retail for US$300 (±R2010), so we reckon it might crest the R3,000 mark, perhaps even going as far as R3,500.<\/p>\n
