The Call of Duty franchise won\u2019t have an annual mainline release for the first time in nearly two decades.<\/p>\n

Activision Blizzard is delaying a Call of Duty game intended to release in 2023 due to the failure of a recent entry into the series (Call of Duty: Vanguard) to meet player expectations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Executives believe that this failure may be because it has released too many games too rapidly. Likewise, this decision has nothing to do with the deal with Microsoft to purchase Activision Blizzard.<\/p>\n

Activision is working on content to fill this gap in its release schedule.<\/p>\n

The Call of Duty game that releases later this year will receive a steady flow of additional content, and next year, players can expect a new free-to-play online title.<\/p>\n

Activision Blizzard’s share prices dropped by 1.4% yesterday after the news of the delay was made public.<\/p>\n

However, the 2022 Call of Duty game being developed by Woodland Hills, Infinity Ward, is still slated to release this year.<\/p>\n
