The highly-rated\u00a0Sonic the Hedgehog 2\u00a0<\/i>movie, which Game informer gave an 8.5 out of 10<\/a> now holds a major record among all video game movies.<\/p>\n

According to Variety<\/a>, the movie had the best opening weekend of any video game movie ever, after recording $141 million at the box office. This surpasses the opening weekend record established by its predecessor, 2020\u2019s Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em>, which collected $70 million.<\/p>\n

Sonic 2<\/em>\u2019s haul included $71 million at the United States box office and $70 million from 53 territories around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis film did such a great job in service of the fans while not excluding general audiences,\u201d said Paramount\u2019s president of domestic distribution, Chris Aronson.<\/p>\n

Sega and Paramount’s video game adaption beat out its competition – Sony and Marvel’s Morbius<\/em> and Michael Bay\u2019s Ambulance<\/em> – which brought in $72 million collectively over their opening weekends.<\/p>\n

It is safe to say that Sonic 2<\/em> is a box office hit, as it cost Paramount $90 million to make, meaning the film is already in the green for the studio.<\/p>\n

At $141 million so far, Sonic the Hedgehog 2<\/em> also has a good chance at overtaking the first Sonic<\/em> movie, which ended its box office run at around $319 million when the COVID-19 pandemic began.<\/p>\n

The movie opened in cinemas on 1 April nationwide in South Africa.<\/p>\n
