Throughout 2021 and 2022, video game delays have become more prevalent than ever, as the Covid-19 pandemic and other factors have shifted the way games are developed.<\/p>\n
While the Covid pandemic no longer impacts the workplace as once before, the obstacles it has created in previous years have resulted in many game titles being postponed by several months or even years.<\/p>\n
To keep track of these ever-shifting release dates and to keep you up to date on when to expect your most anticipated games, we\u2019ve put together a list of every prominent video game delay to date.<\/p>\n
Listed below are all the most anticipated games that have been delayed to 2022 and beyond, and when you can expect them to be released.<\/p>\n
The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake <\/em>was originally expected to be released in January 2021, before it got postponed to a later date in March.<\/p>\n In February 2021, Ubisoft then announced a second delay, but this time postponed the game without a clear new release date in mind.<\/p>\n \u201cExtra development time will allow the team to deliver a remake that feels fresh while remaining faithful to the original,” said Ubisoft.<\/p>\n While no official release date has been provided to date, an internal financial report at Ubisoft says the company expects Prince of Persia: the next Need for Speed<\/em> game.<\/p>\n Developer Criterion owns the Need for Speed<\/em> franchise, and EA made the call to postpone the game as Criterion was needed to help DICE with Battlefield 2042 \u2014 which was released in November 2021.<\/p>\n Criterion promised that it would continue its development of the next Need for Speed<\/em> game in 2022 and said fans should expect its release by the end of March 2023.<\/p>\n The game was set to launch on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X\/S.<\/p>\n Hogwarts Legacy<\/em> was supposed to be released in 2021 before developer Avalanche announced it was delaying the open-world Harry Potter action RPG by a year.<\/p>\n Avalanche simply said it needed more time to \u201ccreate the best possible experience for all the Wizarding World and gaming fans\u201d.<\/p>\n However, fans finally got a look at some gameplay during PlayStation\u2019s State of Play which took place in March this year.<\/p>\n Avalanche development team also addressed commonly asked questions and confirmed the release of Hogwarts Legacy<\/em> will be in the holiday session of 2022, which should be between October and December.<\/p>\n The game was set to launch on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and Xbox Series X\/S.<\/p>\n While there is not much information as to why The Lord of the Rings: Gollum <\/em>was delayed, it was originally expected to release sometime at the end of 2021.<\/p>\n However, the game is now set to release on 1 September 2022, and will likely feature in Geoff Keighley\u2019s Summer Game Fest \u2014 taking place on 9 June at 20:00 SAST.<\/p>\n The game was set to launch on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and Xbox Series X\/S.<\/p>\n Developer Warner Bros (WB) Games originally gave the co-op game Gotham Knights a 2021 release window before it announced its delay to 2022 at a DC fandom event.<\/p>\n “The development teams need more time to deliver the best possible experience for players,” said WB Games.<\/p>\n The game is now set to release on 25 October 2022.<\/p>\n The game was set to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X\/S.<\/p>\n Officially announced in January 2021, Re:Verse<\/em> was initially set to release alongside Resident Evil Village in May 2021 before it was delayed to July.<\/p>\n The game then got delayed again to an undisclosed date in 2022.<\/p>\n While developer Capcom didn\u2019t give any reason as to why the game was delayed, it has said Re:Verse<\/em> will be a \u201cfree extra\u201d to those who purchase Resident Evil: Village<\/em> which was released in May 2021.<\/p>\n The game was set to launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.<\/p>\n Skull & Bones<\/em> has had several setbacks to its release date.<\/p>\n It originally was set for the end of 2018 before being pushed to 2019, and then it was delayed further to March 2020 before being postponed yet again to sometime before the fiscal year-end of 2022.<\/p>\n No reason was given for the multiple delays, but players can now sign up<\/a> to have a chance to participate in the future testing of the game.<\/p>\n Although there isn\u2019t currently an official release date, Ubisoft hopes to have the game ready by the end of 2022 or early 2023.<\/p>\n The game was set to launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.<\/p>\n The co-op shooter Warhammer 40,000: Darktide <\/em>was initially set to release in 2021 before it was pushed to Spring 2022.<\/p>\n Developer Fatshark announced the news on Twitter in July 2021 and cited the challenge of developing a game during the pandemic as the reason for the delay.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have a responsibility to deliver the best game we possibly can, and frankly we need more time to accomplish this goal,\u201d said Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund.<\/p>\n The game is now expected to release on 13 September 2022.<\/p>\n Sony\u2019s highly anticipated God of War: Ragnar\u00f6k<\/em> was delayed from its initial 2021 release window to 2022.<\/p>\n the decision was made “to ensure that Santa Monica Studio can deliver the amazing God of War game that we all want to play,” said PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst.<\/p>\n Some have speculated that the game\u2019s most likely release will be in October or September 2022.<\/p>\n The game was set to launch on PS5 and PS4.<\/p>\n The Division Heartland<\/em>, a free-to-play shooter set in Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s The Division universe, was announced in May 2021.<\/p>\n The title was expected to be released by the end of the 2021 fiscal year.<\/p>\n This hasn\u2019t happened, and Ubisoft has now stated that the game will likely come 2022 before developer GSC Game World paused the game\u2019s development in early March due to the Russian invasion of its employees\u2019 home country, Ukraine.<\/p>\n However, the game\u2019s release date is now set for 8 December 2022.<\/p>\n The game was set to launch on PC and Xbox Series X\/S.<\/p>\n The highly anticipated titles Starfield<\/em> and Redfall <\/em>were initially set to be released in November and September of this year respectively and have both since been delayed to the first half of 2023.<\/p>\n The delay is to ensure that fans do not get unpolished and incomplete versions of these triple-A titles.<\/p>\n \u201cThe teams at Arkane Austin (Redfall) and Bethesda Game Studios (Starfield) have incredible ambitions for their games, and we want to ensure that you receive the best, most polished versions of them,\u201d said Bethesda.<\/p>\n Despite the disappointing news, Bethesda also revealed that it will share the first gameplay deep dives for Redfall <\/em>and Starfield<\/em> soon \u2014 perhaps during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase on 12 June at 19:00 SAST.<\/p>\n Both titles are expected to be released in the first quarter of 2023.<\/p>\n
