Developer Sonic Team Japan has revealed a 40-second teaser trailer for its new and upcoming Sonic game: Sonic Frontiers<\/em>.<\/p>\n

While there have been a couple of 3D Sonic games in recent years, this game looks to take Sonic into a fully open-world environment for the first time.<\/p>\n

In the trailer, we see Sonic the Hedgehog running through large grasslands in a showcase of what developers describe as an \u201copen-zone-inspired experience\u201d that will allow Sonic to explore freely.<\/p>\n

The game promises a variety of landscapes for players to explore across the \u201cStarfall Islands\u201d \u2014 including dense forests, wetlands, scorching deserts, and more.<\/p>\n

The short video also shows off some of the game\u2019s new combat mechanics, as Sonic is shown encircling a robot-like enemy, creating a trail of blue light that boosts the enemy into the air, before Sonic follows up with a chain of slow-motion attacks.<\/p>\n

Additionally, other mechanics shown in the trailer include a high-tech hamster wheel of sorts, that Sonic uses to scan the different landscapes for intel.<\/p>\n

Sonic Frontiers<\/em> is being developed by Sega\u2019s Sonic Team Japan and is being led by producer Sachiko Kawamura and director Morio Kishimoto.<\/p>\n

The game will also feature the return of Crush 40 Jun Senoue for the game\u2019s soundtrack and include an original storyline from Sonic Boom<\/em> writer Ian Flynn.<\/p>\n

Sonic Team Japan has promised game teasers throughout the month of June, and Sonic Frontiers<\/em> is currently being developed for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X\/S.<\/p>\n

The game is set to be released near the end of the year, during the holiday season of 2022.<\/p>\n
