Ubisoft Barcelona staff have begun a three-day strike over the recent announcement that 51 of the studio’s staff are at risk of being laid off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strike is being organised by the Coordinadora Sindical del Videojuego (CSVI) union and is taking place during negotiations over proposed job cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This follows the recent launch of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced for which, according to tech and gameplay animator Manel Cota on X, the Barcelona team oversaw all underwater levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd that same team is being fired right now because Ubisoft thinks that\u2019s what we deserve,” Cota said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While these layoffs are coming after the game’s launch, the job cuts were firsts reported on a month ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early June, VGC reported that Ubisoft was closing its Winnipeg and Belgrade studios and restructuring its Barcelona office to focus solely on Rainbow Six projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUbisoft has initiated a proposed restructuring of Ubisoft Barcelona as part of broader efforts to reduce costs and focus resources on strategic priorities,” said a Ubisoft spokesperson to VGC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Under this proposal, the studio would focus solely on Rainbow Six projects, which may impact up to 51 employees.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis remains a proposal, and no final decision will be made until the collective consultation process has concluded.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are committed to constructive dialogue with employee representatives and to supporting employees throughout this period.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spokesperson also added they are aware of the strike action announced and respect their employees’ right to express their views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
