Not bad for a game still in beta. The community is eagerly awaiting the roll out of update 1.8 – the Adventure Update – which will add numerous features to the game and offer a more rounded single player experience.

Minecraft has exploded from relative obscurity into a global PC indie gaming sensation, which will be hitting the Xbox 360 in future. Locally, we are seeing a number of South African Minecraft servers and related communities springing up.

MyGaming caught up with one such community – RIGaming – to learn more about their Minecraft community and server operations.

Real Intense Gaming (RIG) is owned by Nicolas ‘Krylik’ Torr and Richard ‘RedRover’ Mitchell. RIGaming also hosts a number of multiplayer games beyond Minecraft. The vision for the website is to provide a meeting place for gamers to get together and arrange matches and chat about the latest games.

“We also provide a platform for enthusiasts to host and advertise their game servers to a ready and willing audience,” said Mitchell. “We currently have over 2000 registered gamers in our community of which 700 plus are very active.”

Currently the RIGaming Minecraft server supports 30 concurrent players.

Clive ‘Tw!tCh’ Watts is the general admin on RIGaming, and he is the owner of the server on which Minecraft hosted. Watts self describes as “part admin, part random helper guy,” saying that he leaves the technical MineCraft stuff to community members Frizzle and Xeon. “I pushed for the server and Frizzle and Xeon were the passion behind getting a stable and fun [Minecraft server] going for RIG and the South African gaming community,” said Watts.

“Primary goals for the server would be to make it as stable as possible while offering something that is fairly unique while at the same time being the most populated server in SA,” said Watts. “We have been running an economy server for a while now and the players seem to be very enthusiastic about it.”

Describing the type of gameplay to expect on RIGaming, Watts said “Currently, we are providing an Economy based server with jobs and shops. This best suits productive gameplay and a greater sense of achievement.”

Discussing future expansion on the existing RIGaming Minecraft world, Watts said “We aren’t planning on offering additional worlds in the immediate future unless the stability of additional worlds increase dramatically. It is something we are keeping in mind though.”

“Unfortunately with Minecraft’s versions being in a state of flux (what with version 1.7 just being released) and modders still trying to catch up, coupled with multi-world mods being inherently buggy and unstable we are not looking to provide multi-worlds in the close to mid future,” said Watts

Community Moderation

Minecraft by nature can be prone to abuse from delinquent gamers. One of the pleasures of gaming on an organised and moderated server is that there are measures taken to prevent a few ruining things for the many, otherwise known as ‘griefing’.

“We have admins that are active either on the server or on [the RIG website] most of the time and users keep ‘Residences’ which stops unauthorized breaking/building in their areas,” said Watts.

“With RIG being very community based, we try harbour a sense personal responsibility for what goes on in the servers. So, along with our MC admin staff, and staff on RIG making sure things go smoothly, we encourage users to report any foul play and wrong doing to us. We keep logs of every action taken on MC and as such it makes it easy to track and gather evidence against griefers and the like,” explained Watts.

The local community can also get involved with the RIGaming Minecraft server. “We recruit in-game moderators from existing members who have proved themselves reliable and mature. So ultimately it’s up to an individual to prove they are worthy. When we have a need for additional moderators they are the first we would approach. The first step is to join RIG,” said Watts.

RIGaming Minecraft server details

The following basic server-side plugins are being run:

• AuthMe – Player login system.
• Whitelist – Dynamic whitelisting without reloading the server.
• Dynmap – Dynamic browser-based map.
• EasyRules – Ingame viewable rules.
• Residences – Enables players to create residences and add other players to build in their residences.
• iConomy; Jobs; SignShop – Economy system with player jobs and shops.

There are currently no plans for new server-side mods. On the website side of things, Watts explained that RIGaming has “a plugin that allows us to view players currently online on the server and represent this on the RIG website.”

Watts detailed the server setup, saying “The server is hosted on a VPS on the Mweb Backbone with a 100mb connection running windows server 2008 2nd edition. It is a quad X5500 machine with 6GB ram and sufficient HDD space. Minecraft itself it running off a Ramdisk (to lessen load on the HDD’s and prevent chunk load lag) which is on a 5min rotating backup.”

“I am currently paying for the server out of my own funds,” said Watts. “I have a 1 year contract for the server so it won’t be going anywhere soon. I plan to keep it running for many years to come so users need not be worried about [the server shutting down]. Of course, having help to fund the server and provide future upgrades would be great, but it’s not required as of yet.”

“There have been a few small discussions amongst the owners of RIG and myself, along with Frizzle, about a way to ease the cost of running the server through donations or a subscription service. I believe donations would be the way to go, but we have not decided on anything concrete,” said Watts.

Discussing the challenges of running a Minecraft servers, Watts said “Although MC is a bandwidth intensive game to host, it’s server memory which is the key to hosting a stable server. We have sufficient bandwidth and memory to host upwards of 80 users if the need arises. This would mean other services hosted on the server need to be moved, but we have contingencies for such an event.”

“With 60 users on Minecraft, 24/7 for 30 days, we look at using 600 – 800 GB a month,” said Watts.

In conclusion, we asked RIGaming to differentiate their server from others available locally as well as internationally. “The RIGaming server is hosted locally on a high-speed network which allows players to use local bandwidth and play online with low latency,” said Watts.

To register for the RIGaming Minecraft server, head on over to the RIGaming website and request access to the RIG Minecraft server from there.

RIGaming SA Minecraft server interview << Comments and views

[20

post-12932","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-features
["GET
