South Africa’s broadband market is awash with broadband promotions, with Cell C, Vodacom, MTN, 8ta and Telkom unveiling aggressively priced broadband products.<\/p>\n

These broadband promotions range from high end mobile data packages, to free installations and data on ADSL products from Telkom.<\/p>\n

Despite the fact that these products are advertised extensively, it can be challenging to keep track of all the special offers. Here is a list of the most prominent promotions,<\/p>\n

8ta Go Big 10GB<\/p>\n

On 23 June 2011 8ta unveiled the best priced mobile broadband product ever launched in South Africa: 10GB per month, for R199 per month on a 24 month contract. For an extra R100 per month subscribers can get another 10GB to use between midnight and 05h00. More about 8ta’s Go Big 10GB promotion here.<\/a><\/p>\n

MTN uncapped<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 7 July 2011 MTN announced that the pricing of their Broadband Uncapped Lite package has been reduced from R749 to R299. The pricing of their Broadband Uncapped Pro was slashed from R1,999 to R899. The two packages are available on 24-month contracts and will be subject to a fair usage policy of 3GB and 10GB respectively after which users are throttled to 128Kbps. Cell C mobile data<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under former CEO Lars Reichelt, Cell C rolled out a 21Mbps HSPA+ network and also shook up South Africa’s broadband market with never-before-seen data pricing in September 2011. This includes a 5GB data and modem package at R299 per month and a 2GB bundle and modem for R149 per month, both active for 12 months. Vodacom 2GB + 2GB = R149<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vodacom hit back at Cell C in April 2011 by launching their ’2GB + 2GB’ promotion. For R149 per month, Vodacom offers consumers a 12-month 2GB data contract, a 7.2Mbps HSPA modem and an additional 2GB of ‘Night Owl bandwidth’ which can be used between midnight and 5am. MTN 2GB for R149<\/strong><\/p>\n

Telkom Internet extra data<\/strong><\/p>\n

Telkom’s ADSL pricing and usage limits started to look very dated compared to the numerous mobile data promotions, and the company reacted in July 2011 by increasing usage allowances in July and August from 1GB, 5GB and 10GB to 5GB, 10GB and 20GB respectively – free of charge. Telkom free broadband<\/strong><\/p>\n

Telkom launched their ‘Free Broadband’ promotion on 18 July. It offers new customers a free subscription to their Fast Internet (up to 1024kbps ADSL access) for three consecutive months. This promotion also includes 5GB of free monthly data, free ADSL installation and fixed line installation if needed.
