It’s been so long since we’ve seen an Unreal game, the only time we hear the name mentioned anymore is when someone is talking about the Engine. Epic president Mike Capps recently joked about this himself, saying, “At some point you wonder why we don’t just rename the engine to the Gears Engine or something.”<\/p>\n

Jokes aside, Epic has certainly been neglecting the Unreal franchise, spending most of their time working on the Gears of War series and developing new properties.<\/p>\n

Talking to IndustryGamers<\/a>, Mike Capps spoke on the issue: “We have a couple other major franchises that we’ve not been paying attention to. It’s been a long time since we shipped an Unreal game, and it’s an awfully loved franchise that we hold pretty dear here. We haven’t been giving it the attention it deserves because we’ve been focusing on Gears of War and we’re still a relatively small company.”<\/p>\n

“We’ve been sort of focused on making new properties, which you’ve seen with Shadow Complex, BulletStorm and Infinity Blade, but sometimes I think just as a businessman that maybe we should be spending some more time with our existing franchises.”<\/p>\n

Unreal certainly does feel like a cash cow that hasn’t been milked in quite some time, and there are bound to be countless fans clamouring for something new. Existing, successful IPs are almost always a safer choice for sheer profit margins, and as much as one could admire Epic for taking risks and trying new things, it may be wise to focus on their Gears of War and Unreal franchises for a while. As Mike Capps says himself, they’re still a relatively small company.<\/p>\n
