Following in the footsteps of its new endless free World of Warcraft trial mode<\/a>, Blizzard has announced the StarCraft II: Starter Edition, which effectively replaces the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty demo.<\/p>\n

In the World of Warcraft trial, players are limited to level 20. StarCraft II does not have a similar levelling system, but there are of course comparable limitations. The Starter Edition will allow players access to the first four missions from the Terran single player campaign, as well as the first two challenges and some multiplayer content.<\/p>\n

Players will be able to try out the game’s multiplayer, but will be limited to the following maps: Xel’Naga Caverns, Shattered Temple, Discord IV, and High Orbit. These are likely to be rotated in time. The second major limitation is that players will only be able to play as Terran, which in fairness, should provide solid grounding for new players. The third and most significant limitation is the lack of access to the game’s multiplayer league system, which arguably forms the core of the multiplayer game.<\/p>\n

One of the cool perks about the new Starter Edition is that it is cross compatible with the full retail version, which means it will be possible for Starter Edition players to play with retail edition owners.<\/p>\n

Anyone with a Battle.net account can download the free Starter Edition which will never expire. Of course, anyone can create a Battle.net account for free, but South Africans are encouraged to create a European account.<\/a><\/p>\n

Any Achievements and progress you earn in the Starter Edition will be carried over should you choose to purchase the full version.<\/p>\n
