Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will support dedicated servers. Many COD fans will breath a sigh of relief at the news, with the overwhelming consensus being that a lack of dedicated servers was Modern Warfare 2’s biggest downfall.<\/p>\n
“The big announcement today is that we’re supporting dedicated servers for PC, which is really cool,” said Beachhead Studios’ Noah Heller at Gamescom.<\/p>\n
“And of course we’re working really hard right now on the customised version of Elite for the PC [versions of Call of Duty games], because it’s an open platform and has some challenges.”<\/p>\n
Although Modern Warfare 2 did not use dedicated servers, the follow up in the COD franchise, Black Ops did. The original reason for shunning dedicated servers in Modern Warfare 2 was that Activision wanted to have direct control of maintaining the quality of the online service.<\/p>\n
Although the overwhelming majority of copies sold on COD games is split between Xbox 360 and PS3, South Africa has a disproportionately large PC audience. Competitive gamers will also be thrilled, as dedicated servers mean that the game will be a viable competitive title.<\/p>\n
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be the first COD from Infinity Ward to support dedicated servers since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which remains the most popular online first person shooter in South Africa.<\/p>\n
