Okay, we all knew it was eventually going to be announced, but now we’ve actually seen the name printed and revealed by an official source: Globalfoundries – the guys who actually make AMD’s graphics cards, amongs other things.<\/p>\n

Apparently the Radeon HD 7000 family of GPUs will be based on AMD’s Trinity part. The HD 7000 is officially being referred to as Southern Islands, after the HD 6000 series which was released earlier this year was labelled Northern Islands.<\/p>\n

Although the chart revealed only confirms a 32nm fabrication process for various AMD chipsets, other sources indicate that the new cards will be 28nm graphics chips. According to Fudzilla<\/a>, the new family of GPUs is headed for a late September release, which will put it exactly one year behind the HD 6000 family.<\/p>\n

Rumours suggest that Nvidia’s own 28nm generation of graphics cards will only make it out in early 2012. If this is true, AMD will once again have a head start with its new family of graphics cards.<\/p>\n

Rumoured technical details for AMD’s HD 7000 family include 64-bit addressing, PCI-E 3.0 support, and the use of MIMD insurrections instead of VLIW which was previously core to AMD GPU architectures.<\/p>\n

A September launch will see the new HD 7000 cards hit shelves just in time for some massive and demanding PC titles, including Battlefield 3 and The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.<\/p>\n
