Last month we got confirmation<\/a> that AMD is working on its next generation graphics card lineup, the Radeon HD 7000 series.<\/p>\n

AMD’s manufacturing partner, Global Foundries, presented information about the new GPUs during a presentation, officially confirming the existence of the new GPUs.<\/p>\n

The HD 7000 series is officially being referred to as Southern Islands, and is based on AMD’s Trinity part. Various sources have confirmed that the new GPUs will be based on a 28nm fabrication process.<\/p>\n

It was previously expected that AMD would release the new graphics cards this month, again giving AMD a few months head start on Nvidia, who will supposedly only release its next graphics card range in early 2012. This would also have given gamers looking to upgrade for the likes of Battlefield 3 and Skyrim something to look forward to.<\/p>\n

However, according to Fudzilla<\/a>, TSMC and Globalfoundries are having problems with the mass production of the 28nm chips, with the yields being unexpectedly low. As a result, the HD 7000 GPUs will only be ready to ship in 2012.<\/p>\n

Nvidia, meanwhile, has stated that it will be shipping its new GPU range, codenamed Kepler, next year.<\/p>\n

AMD reportedly could launch the HD 7000 cards in late 2011 based on current yields, but availability would be extremely limited. Production on the cards is expected to be ramped up going into 2012, allowing for a solid launch alongside Nvidia’s new offerings.<\/p>\n
