It has not been a good year for Sony<\/a> and their online networks; and the woes continue with the news that about 60,000 PSN accounts have been hacked.<\/p>\n

Sony Online Entertainment had 33,000 breaches.<\/p>\n

Sony Chief Information Security Officer, Philip Reitinger, posted on the Playstation blog<\/a> to let everyone know what’s been going on:<\/p>\n

“We want to let you know that we have detected attempts on Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment services to test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords against our network database.”<\/p>\n

Of all the attempts, 93,000 hacks were successful across all the networks; these accounts showed minor activity before being locked by Sony’s security teams, he said.<\/p>\n

“If you have a credit card associated with your account, your credit card number is not at risk. We will work with any users whom we confirm have had unauthorized purchases made to restore amounts in the PSN\/SEN or SOE wallet.”<\/p>\n

As a further preventative measure, Sony are going to require secure password resets for the accounts affected – if that’s you, expect an e-mail soon.<\/p>\n

According to Reitinger, the source of these mass attempts came from outside the Sony networks, saying that the data was mined from “one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or other sources.”<\/p>\n

You’d almost think that huge amounts of user data hadn’t been stolen from Sony earlier this year, hey, Philip?<\/p>\n

At least this time, PSN wasn’t shut down for weeks.<\/p>\n
