On 4 October 2011, Playstation launched a “Only on PSN” campaign in the US, where some classic PS2 titles like God Hand and Odin Sphere became available for download on PSN.<\/p>\n

While Eurogamer has already reported<\/a> that the campaign will be US-Only, Sony’s Andy Stewart has confirmed on Playstation’s EU blog<\/a> (read the comments) that at least the content from the campaign is “on route (sic).”<\/p>\n

There is currently no ETA.<\/p>\n

So what does this mean?<\/p>\n

Well aside from gaining some pretty decent classic PS2 titles; this announcement has spurred speculation about seeing more PS2 titles making their way onto PSN.<\/p>\n

While it’s logical to assume that Sony might be testing the waters – seeing how willing PS3 owners are to fork over cash for PS2 games they’ve likely bought already in the previous generation – I wouldn’t wager much on that for two reasons:<\/p>\n

Firstly, the titles on offer aren’t exactly the most graphically intense games out on PS2; and could arguably be run easier via emulation software than, say, Shadow of the Colossus.<\/p>\n

Which is why the latter got an HD remake.<\/p>\n

Which is actually my second point – Sony are currently enjoying quite a large success with their HD collections, with fans of “classics” practically gagging on their own drool, begging for more.<\/p>\n

I can hear it now: fans who get a PSN-PS2 release, complaining about how those “evil Sony [expletives] ” gave them the short end of the stick by not making their favourite, obscure PS2 title HD.<\/p>\n

How this new potential PSN category plays out, remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

For now, be happy that some cool PS2 classics will be downloadable on PSN soon – with possibly more to come.<\/p>\n
