Why is it that the idea of all our favourite games from generations past, getting re-worked and updated into glorious HD, makes us salivate like starved coyotes in a petting zoo?<\/p>\n

Maybe it’s out of pure nostalgia, or the shallow desires of seeing out-dated effects being remastered to meet levels of our spoiled, high definition visual palette.<\/p>\n

Whatever the reasoning that spurns our love for all things old \u2013 game developers and publishers have definitely picked up on it.<\/p>\n

While you’d be tempted to think this is a Sony thing \u2013 taking full advantage of the PS3’s lack of backwards compatibility; sponging a more cash out us by making us pay for games we already own \u2013 you’d be wrong.<\/p>\n

Almost everyone’s doing it now: from Abe to Zone of the Enders, there’s a whole lot of HD remakes, remasterings and re-releases heading your way \u2013 so let’s have a look at the 5 that have us most excited.<\/p>\n

5. Silent Hill Collection<\/strong><\/p>\n

Silent Hill is one of the most chilling and disturbing games series ever created; psychological horror, gruesomely twisted enemies and themes that very few people would dare to engage.<\/p>\n

Also doors. Lots and lots of locked doors.<\/p>\n

Silent Hill Collection HD is, you guessed it, an HD update for Silent Hill 2 (including the Restless Dreams scenario) and Silent Hill 3.<\/p>\n

Silent Hill 2 is said to be the best one in the series \u2013 set apart from the continuum that flows from the original to Silent Hill 3 \u2013 and is actually regarded as my ultimate super best game of all time.<\/p>\n

That may be meaningless to you, but I don’t care.<\/p>\n

Konami’s HD remastering of the horrific town of horrible horror is expected 25 November 2011<\/p>\n

4. Final Fantasy X HD<\/strong><\/p>\n

There has been absolutely no information about the HD release of Final Fantasy X outside of the announcement made at the Tokyo Game Show last month (September 2011).<\/p>\n

While FF7 fanboys persist in the baaaawww-fest of \u201cwhere is my FF7 remake\u201d, all things considered, FFX is the most obvious choice for a redone HD Final Fantasy.<\/p>\n

It was definitely one of the best received RPGs of the previous generation, with a compelling story, refined and strategic gameplay and some of the sexiest, most colourful graphics of the time.<\/p>\n

I can’t wait to see how Square-Enix will update this \u2013 if I can have one request though…that laughing scene with Tidus and Yuna…please find a way to remove\/change that.<\/p>\n

Final Fantasy X HD is a 10th anniversary celebration for the game and is expected in 2012.<\/p>\n

3. MDK 2 HD<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can’t hate me for feeding nostalgia on a list that’s basically here for nostalgia.<\/p>\n

MDK 2 is a third-person action shooter following Kurt, a pretty high-tech janitor who has the unsavory task of fighting alien invasions; Dr. Fluke Hawkins, a crazy scientist (aren’t they all); and Max, a six-legged robotic dog with a load of guns.<\/p>\n

The late 90s were… a different time, okay?<\/p>\n

The trio are back in remastered HD, bringing the humour and craziness that we loved so very much from the originals along with them, as they once again fight an alien scourge.<\/p>\n

MDK 2 HD is actually available for download right now<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2. Metal Gear Solid Collection<\/strong><\/p>\n

Newcomers to gaming in the current generation only got to enjoy Metal Gear Solid 4, in all its shiny, awesome glory; but being fourth in the series (excluding the unnumbered entries), the game wouldn’t have made much sense.<\/p>\n

Granted, I’ve played all the games and they still don’t make much sense.<\/p>\n

Well, that’s where MGS Collection comes in.<\/p>\n

With HD re-works of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Konami are bringing last generation Snake to the present.<\/p>\n

So newbies, too, can now be utterly confused as to what the hell is actually going on in this series.<\/p>\n

The trifecta of HD Snakes is expected to go on sale 25 November 2011.<\/p>\n

1. Leisure Suit Larry HD<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh yes.<\/p>\n

We recently reported<\/a> on the announcement of Leisure Suit Larry going HD, but I don’t think the article quite encompassed how awesome this actually is.<\/p>\n

Larry defined an era.<\/p>\n

He went where the Roger Wilco’s, King Graham’s and Sonny Bond’s of yesteryear never dared to tread \u2013 and in doing so established one the most lovable characters and series in the history of pixellated boobs.<\/p>\n

And now, 10-year-olds of today will get to enjoy the pleasure of these point-and-click adventure games, whilst awkardly deflecting their parents’ inquiries.<\/p>\n

I suppose the reason why this is most exciting, is the potential for other series following suit \u2013 Police Quest? Kings Quest? Space Quest?<\/p>\n

IS THIS THE ADVENTURE GAME REVIVAL WE ALWAYS DREAMED OF!?<\/p>\n

Unlikely…but one can always hope.<\/p>\n

Leisure Suit Larry: Land of the Lounge Lizards remade for HD will be coming out in 2012.<\/p>\n
