Yesterday (16 October 2011) Indie developers, Mojang, celebrated their first birthday.<\/p>\n
And what a way to celebrate – with the announcement that Minecraft has passed 15 million users.<\/p>\n
Who’d have thought an open-world, 8-bit indie game initially developed by a single man would surpass 15 million registered players within under three years of going into development?<\/p>\n
Well that’s exactly what Minecraft has done, with creator Markus “Notch” Persson proudly announcing over the weekend, “Holy moly, we reached 15 million registered users. :-O omg”.<\/p>\n
The statistics tab on Minecraft.net reports that there are 15,088,126 registered Minecraft users, of which 3,819,920 (25.32%) have purchased the game.<\/p>\n
In the last 24 hours, 44,764 people have registered and 10,072 have bought the game.<\/p>\n
It’s kind of crazy when you take into account that the game hasn’t even launched properly yet, and is scheduled to go gold next month.<\/p>\n
Notch is expected to implement a “code freeze” in two days, which means there will not be any more changes made to the game between now and its release.<\/p>\n
Minecraft is currently available on PC and Mac, although it is heading for Xbox Live and there is also Minecraft – Pocket Edition which is available for Android 2.2+ phones.<\/p>\n
