Telkom launched their new capped and uncapped ADSL packages for business customers on 18 October 2011. The new packages include bundles for 384kbps, 1024kbps and 4\/10Mbps lines.<\/p>\n

As part of the uncapped packages Telkom will include a modem with 3G fail-over, free of charge on all two year contracts.<\/p>\n

Speaking about their new broadband packages for business clients, Steve Lewis, Managing Executive Product House at Telkom, said that this is merely the first step.<\/p>\n

The next step is to offer combined fixed and mobile packages said Lewis. What will follow after that is an offering which will allow users to use either fixed or mobile broadband from the same bundle or wallet.<\/p>\n

Lewis explained that they are targeting small and medium business with their offerings, though they are not excluding larger companies.<\/p>\n

Telkom Business is focusing on higher caps, uncapped products, and valued added services (VAS).<\/p>\n

Unlike Telkom’s consumer uncapped ADSL accounts, the new business uncapped offerings won’t be throttled at certain times of the day. However, as with their consumer uncapped offerings, the accounts will be subject to an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).<\/p>\n

Quizzed about the particulars of the policy, Lewis said that they couldn’t say what the thresholds for “excessive usage” were at this point due to the dynamic nature of networks.<\/p>\n

He said that they aren’t out to get the customer, but to try and maintain a high quality of service on the network.<\/p>\n

Excessive usage is something that will be determined over months of usage, Lewis said, explaining that customers will be warned before their accounts are throttled for violating the AUP.<\/p>\n

Exchange congestion<\/strong><\/p>\n

With congestion at exchanges being blamed for poor ADSL performance in certain areas, Lewis also had to field questions on whether more uncapped offerings would compound the problem.<\/p>\n

Lewis said that congestion between the DSLAM in the exchange and the IP network is an issue that had to be managed.<\/p>\n

“Telkom will have to manage congestion based on the cost of the product,” Lewis said, adding that their engineers would need to optimize the network to prevent congestion from happening.<\/p>\n

Migration under contract<\/strong><\/p>\n

Telkom Business customers with existing 24-month contracts will be able to migrate to a different package, representatives confirmed. However, if a contract has more than 6 months remaining, the customer won’t get the free modem.<\/p>\n
