At the beginning of 2011 a tenacious group of modders announced that they were working on a StarCraft II mod called World of StarCraft.<\/a><\/p>\n

The idea was to create an MMO using StarCraft II’s powerful map creator. The announcement came on the back of years of rumours that Blizzard was working on its own World of StarCraft MMO.<\/p>\n

These rumours were crushed when the publisher confirmed that it was working on an MMO that would introduce a completely new universe to the Blizzard stable.<\/p>\n

Naturally then, the World of StarCraft mod created a lot of hype, and before long Activision Blizzard stepped in and issued the modders a cease and desist letter, demanding that all Youtube videos touting the “World of StarCraft” name be taken down. As a result, the project had its name changed from World of StarCraft to StarCraft Universe, although the basic concept remains unchanged.<\/p>\n

Last night the StarCraft Universe blog<\/a> announced that a “Dev Preview” of the game will be made playable between 19th and 30th October, allowing players to get a taste of what to expect from the game’s PVP component.<\/p>\n

“As promised back in January, we will have something for you guys to play while we’re at BlizzCon! Be aware that SCU PvP will only be available until the end of October. We will then pull it down for further polishing since technically it isn’t even ready for an Open Beta. It is however, fully functional and fully enjoyable,” reads the official announcement.<\/p>\n

“Upon entering the arena or “Encephalon Grid” as we call it, you will be able to play as any class, starting at level 30 with a full set of level 30 gear.”<\/p>\n
