Pro Gaming headset review

The Tritton A.X. Pro gaming headset we have in for review falls into the category of “big-boy toys.” A large, feature rich, high end and expensive package, the A.X. Pro is not for the faint of hearted.

If you can stomach forking over R2,400 for a true 5.1 package, read on and see how this headset fares.

The design

The A.X. Pro has a chunky, bold design that means business. Sure, The Verge might think you’re a basement dwelling nerd for wearing them, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

An over-the-head band design means the headphones are well supported and are initially comfortable; however the weight of the device may change that after a few hours of gaming. Detachable ear and headrail pads are present allowing you to select the combination that provides the most comfort for your head type.

Probably the best part of the headset design is the detachable microphone. Conveniently placed, easy to attach and detach, and secure while attached, having it in place is a comfortable affair, and removing it when not in use is painless enough; top marks here.

The tech specs

On the technical side of things, the A.X. Pro sports an impressive feature list.

A digital audio control box is the centrepiece of the setup, and users can choose between two audio input methods, using either three RCA jacks from your soundcard, or an optical cable from various computers and consoles alike.

Using the former means the soundcard will perform all the audio processing, while using the latter will let the audio control box process the audio. This isn’t a bad thing though; the control box supports features such as Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro logic, Dynamic range control, and time delay for rear channels among others.

The control box also features a USB out for two way communication, allowing the A.X. Pro to feature a microphone for voice communication.

Audio controls that allow you to customise the levels of each channel of speakers (front, centre and rear) are also present, along with a headphones connection and the unit’s power connection.

Each headphone cup features 4 speakers with the following specifications:

• Center Speaker – 23mm Driver 120dB +- 3dB at 1mW, 1KHz; 130-2.5KHz(from 1KHz down 10dB)
• Front Speaker – 30mm Driver 120dB +- 3dB at 1mW, 1KHz; 20-20KHz(from 1KHz down 10dB)
• Rear Speaker – 30mm Driver 120dB +- 3dB at 1mW, 1KHz; 20-20KHz(from 1KHz down 10dB)
• Subwoofer – 40mm Driver 118dB +- 3dB at 1mW, 1KHz; 20-30KHz(from 1KHz down 10dB)

The experience

The A.X. Pro from Tritton has excellent sound quality when the user is gaming. Sounds are clear and have presence, immersing the user in the game and presenting them with a realistic audio experience.

The headsets also allow you to customise individual sound levels for specific channels, meaning users can reduce volume for the front and centre channels and boost rear channel volume, making it more prominent.

I found this allowed a greater level of awareness while playing COD and Battlefield, something to note if you’re serious about first person shooters.

Audio quality wasn’t quite on par with dedicated audiophile headphones when it came to music or movies, but the A.X. Pro performed as well as any other high-end gaming oriented headset.

Build quality is superb, and the unit feels solid to the touch, something that should withstand extended gaming sessions and the occasional nerd rage outburst. This build quality extends to the detachable microphone, which is well placed, convenient to position and transmits clear audio.

Features like interchangeable earpads and the inline audio control round off the package, meaning most consumers won’t be left wanting more out of the A.X. Pros.

The bad

There are however some issues with the A.X. Pro that may put consumers off.

The first (and by far the worst) issue is the sheer amount of cables that litter the place when you’ve installed the headset.

There is the power cable, the audio cables (between one and three depending on your audio configuration), the USB cable for two way communication, and the cable leading from the control box to the headphones.

Other than cluttering up the place and extending the install time though, this can be dealt with fairly painlessly.

The other issue is the weight of the headphones. They are substantial; so much so that gaming with them on for extended periods of time becomes quite uncomfortable.

The verdict

The A.X. Pro headphones are not perfect. That being said, they offer a complete feature rich package, compatibility with most gaming consoles, high quality audio while gaming and a unique trick or two that keeps them relevant in a saturated market.

They are cumbersome, the external power is annoying, and the mass of cables is far from ideal.

That said, if you can see past these issues, and the rather large price tag of the headset, there is no reason why you shouldn’t get the Tritton A.X. Pro gaming headphones.

Score: 90%

Features: 10
Design: 9
Audio quality: 9
Build quality: 9

<a title="Tritton A.X.
