Speaking to Industrygamers<\/a>, EA Playfish GM John Earner – the dude pushing EA’s social gaming activities – weighed in with his views on where he thinks the gaming industry is headed.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think the [full-price] $60 game is going to go away,” said Earner.<\/p>\n

Well that’s a good start.<\/p>\n

He states that as long as developers make “great” first-person shooters and RPGs, there will be an audience of millions who will want to pay for it.<\/p>\n

But Earner isn’t blind to the fact that platforms like iOS and Android are very popular – and that the industry has taken note of that – boosting the spread of social gaming on platforms like Facebook.<\/p>\n

He has a view of the game market eventually converging, with all games sort of swimming in the same pool.<\/p>\n

“In a few years time we won’t say social games anymore because all games will be social”<\/p>\n

He pointed out that Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3, being blockbuster titles in their own right, were also becoming more social – bringing a wider group of people in your circle of friends together.<\/p>\n

I guess the man has a point – almost every title you play nowadays has some sort of link to social networks, or incorporates some form of multiplayer and networking.<\/p>\n

But all gaming eventually running under the banner of social gaming?<\/p>\n

I’m not quite so sure.<\/p>\n
