{"id":15008,"date":"2011-10-24T20:34:00","date_gmt":"2011-10-24T18:34:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T22:00:00","slug":"africa-is-not-so-dark-after-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/business\/15008-africa-is-not-so-dark-after-all","title":{"rendered":"Africa is not so dark after all"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Telegraph has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/science\/picture-galleries\/8838796\/Satellite-images-of-Earth-show-roads-air-traffic-cities-at-night-and-internet-cables.html\" title=\"Satellite images of Earth show roads, air traffic, cities at night and internet cables\">posted images<\/a> created by Felix Pharand-Deschenes, founder and director of Globaia,  that show how subsea cables, power lines, roads, railways, and air  traffic corridors cover the surface of Earth.<\/p>\n<p>According to The  Telegraph, his visualisations are based on real data from US government  sources like the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the  National Oceanic for railways, pipelines and roads as well as the  Atmospheric Administration for the air traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Among the pictures  in the slideshow are two of Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The first shows the continent&rsquo;s  underwater cables that connect it to the Internet, road and rail  networks, and electricity transmission lines all superimposed over  cities at night.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at Pharand-Deschenes&rsquo; images it would seem that Africa isn&rsquo;t nearly as dark as the old clich&eacute; would suggest.<\/p>\n<p>A  mesh of major roads, railways and air traffic corridors span across  its  surface, and the single strand of undersea connectivity that used  to  come to Africa&rsquo;s most southern tip has multiplied into a good  handful.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36640 \" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Africa-tech-footprint-at-night.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"African tech footprint at night\" title=\"African tech footprint at night\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_36640\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 630px;\">\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\"><em>Human technology presence over Africa at night<\/em><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Looking  at the lines of subsea cables running around Africa as beams of light  is beautiful, but Steve Song and Greg Mahlknecht from South Africa have  developed cable maps that show more detail.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_36642\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 610px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36642\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ManyPossibilities-African-undersea-cable-map.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"ManyPossibilities African undersea cable map\" title=\"ManyPossibilities African undersea cable map\" width=\"600\" height=\"567\" \/><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\"><em>ManyPossibilities African undersea cable map<\/em><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Song&rsquo;s map shows <a href=\"http:\/\/manypossibilities.net\/african-undersea-cables\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"African Undersea Cables\">Mediterranean and African undersea cables<\/a> along with their design capacities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cablemap.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Greg's Cable Map\">Mahlknecht&rsquo;s map is interactive<\/a> and shows cables from all over the world.
