It’s Valve<\/a> boss Gabe Newell<\/a>‘s birthday, and what better way to celebrate than by sending out beta invites to one of the developer’s most anticipated games. Valve has announced<\/a> that the first batch of beta invites has been sent out.<\/p>\n

A survey<\/a> about the game was sent out a few days ago, and this was the first step toward selecting a new batch of eligible testers. Beta testers will also receive two extra beta keys that they may share with friends using Steam<\/a>‘s built-in trading system.<\/p>\n

While this is the first wave of beta invites, Valve is expected to drastically increase the size of the beta over the next few months, so if you didn’t receive an invite that doesn’t mean you won’t still get a chance to try out the beta.<\/p>\n

Dota 2 was officially unveiled at Gamescom<\/a> earlier this year, and it has yet to be given an official release date. Valve has not clarified whether or not it will be a free-to-play game, but we do know that it will be launched exclusively for the Steam platform.<\/p>\n

Numerous screen shots have been leaked via the closed beta which has been underway for a number of months now.<\/p>\n

Valve has previously announced that Dota 2 won’t make its previously planned 2011 release period, and the public beta which is kicking off now is expected to run for a few months.<\/p>\n

“IceFrog<\/a> has a bunch of testers he’s worked with as long as he’s been doing development. The first thing we’ve been working with is addressing their concerns. We’ve been through four or five different versions of the user interface, getting it to the point where we’ve addressed the feedback we’ve got from those guys,” said Newell.<\/p>\n

“We’ll just go into progressively wider and wider distribution. I don’t think it’ll be shipped until next year.”<\/p>\n
