{"id":25659,"date":"2011-11-14T16:04:20","date_gmt":"2011-11-14T14:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=25659"},"modified":"2011-11-14T17:17:59","modified_gmt":"2011-11-14T15:17:59","slug":"durban-gaming-latency-improvment-on-the-horizon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/business\/25659-durban-gaming-latency-improvment-on-the-horizon","title":{"rendered":"Durban gaming latency improvement on the horizon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/forum\/showthread.php\/20457-MWeb\">MWEB<\/a> announced today (14 November 2011) the establishment of an MWEB point-of-presence (POP) at the vendor-neutral Teraco Data Centre in Durban.<\/p>\n<p>MWEB is inviting other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to peer with MWEB at the data centre on a settlement-free basis (called open peering).<\/p>\n<p>What this entails for Durban-based gamers using MWEB, is that any traffic shifted between gamers in the area will no longer have to make a round-trip to the data centres in Johannesburg or Cape Town, and back again. This should reduce latency between Durban gamers.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, gamers using ISPs that are peering with MWEB at the Teraco POP in Durban should also see reduced latency between themselves and their fellow Durbanite gamers.<\/p>\n<p>Currently all of the larger ISPs are peering with MWEB at their Johannesburg and Cape Town POPs, so one would presume they would extend this peering arrangement to the Teraco Durban data centre in due course.<\/p>\n<p>Rudi Jansen, MWEB CEO, said the company embarked on a policy of open peering last year, whereby ISPs agree to exchange traffic on each other\u2019s networks at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>Teraco hosts NAPAfrica, a neutral layer two Internet exchange point in Cape Town and Johannesburg which connects to CINX and JINX.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransit links in South Africa remain very expensive with local lines costing significantly more than international broadband prices.
