Those of you who downloaded the New! Improved! Now with about a zillion ads, haha!<\/em> dashboard update earlier this week will probably have noticed that, well, yes, it’s got about a zillion ads on it.<\/p>\n

It’s right there in the marketing line I just made up and everything.<\/p>\n

Anyway, a bunch of clever people over on Reddit have devised a couple of ways of blocking these ads completely.<\/p>\n

One way would be to block all content from Microsoft’s ad domain, rad.msn.com, on your router – if the model supports doing so (most do).<\/p>\n

Another way is by signing up for a free OpenDNS account, and doing more or less the same thing as with the router, but over a few more steps:<\/p>\n

  1. Sign up for a free OpenDNS account.<\/li>\n
  2. Add a network for your current IP address.<\/li>\n
  3. Go to Advanced Settings and next to ‘Domain Typos’, ensure ‘Enable typo correction’ is checked.<\/li>\n
  4. Go to Web Content Filtering settings and set the filtering level to ‘None’, and under ‘Manage individual domains’, put rad.msn.com and select ‘Always block’ and then click ‘Add domain’.<\/li>\n
  5. On your Xbox, go to System Settings -> Network Settings -> (your connection) -> Configure Network -> DNS settings -> Manual, and enter the OpenDNS IP addresses for the primary and secondary DNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.<\/li>\n
  6. Clear your hard drive cache: System Settings -> Storage -> Hard Drive -> press Y -> Clear System Cache<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Now we just wait until Microsoft devises a way of getting around this. Because they will.<\/p>\n
