It’s one of those rumours that’s come via a friend of a colleague of an ex of a third cousin twice removed of an extraterrestrial visitor, but if it’s to be believed in spite of this, Nintendo<\/a> is apparently looking at making the Wii U<\/a> controller (and, by extension, the 3DS<\/a>) an e-reader device.<\/p>\n

This is all according to a report over on media collective ,Forget the Box, where gaming and tech writer, Mike Gwilliam, claims that a “good friend in Los Angeles who works for a software developer” was approached by Nintendo to port some undisclosed software from iOS<\/a> over to the Wii U. Although the specifics aren’t provided for confidentiality reasons, it’s assumed this is some kind of reader software.<\/p>\n

“Nintendo is planning to launch a digital e-reader type service where you can download books, magazines, newspapers, comics, and other publications to your Wii U console,” writes Gwilliam. “These publications would stream to your Wii U controller\u2019s touchscreen, and you could go lay in your bed or couch and read them. The touch screen would be used to flip through pages of an e-book or magazine, and there would even be a searchable index.”<\/p>\n

Gwilliam’s source also alleged that the Nintendo 3DS would share the Wii U’s e-reader service, in much the same way that the iPad<\/a> and iPhone \/ iPod devices share content from the Apple App Store.<\/p>\n

Nintendo has yet to confirm or deny this, but it doesn’t actually seem all that unlikely, actually. With the Wii U’s competitors, the Xbox 360<\/a> and PS3<\/a>, increasingly providing a range of expanded media services, it makes sense that Nintendo’s next console would do likewise.<\/p>\n

The Wii U doesn’t yet have a launch date, but it’s expected sometime in the second half of this year. Look out for it at E3<\/a> in June, I’m sure.<\/p>\n
