Developer Media Molecule has made a tidy profit from smash-hit Playstation franchise Little Big Planet, but the annual director\u2019s report now shows that they\u2019ve spent a ton of cash last year on R&D for new projects.<\/p>\n
As explained in the report, having all your eggs in one basket can be risky, and the company\u2019s main business risks arose “largely as a result of the company’s heavy reliance on the one LittleBigPlanet brand name.”<\/p>\n
Thus the profits have been funneled directly into R&D, as well as some extra, the support shows 3.44 million pounds of profit in 2011, but it also shows 4.1 million pounds spent on research and development.<\/p>\n
The report reads, “It is vital for Media Molecule to focus a high proportion of its resources on R&D to allow it to maintain its world leading position as a developer of innovative games.”<\/p>\n
The report also outlined the importance to “remain at the forefront of technological advances, and must bring new and often risky innovations to market in products of the highest quality.”<\/p>\n
While there are no details as to what these new game\/s may be, the studio have already said they won\u2019t be a third LittleBigPlanet game, and the report references investments in “leading edge physics and dynamics, rapid world creation from laser data, innovative routes to market via web based interfaces, 3D stereo-optics for advanced simulation, and use of ‘hi-def’ data capture and processing techniques.”<\/p>\n
We\u2019ll have to wait and see what MM has cooked up, but it\u2019s clear the company wants to be known for more than just a single franchise.<\/p>\n
