We’ve had rumours that Sony and Microsoft will reveal new consoles and E3 2012, and rumours that they won’t. So maybe the only rumours left to mill were that one of the companies would simply quit the next-gen console business altogether.<\/p>\n
Hold onto your socks then, we’re going in.<\/p>\n
“Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation,” predicted Nanea Reeves, chief product officer for cloud-based gaming service Gaikai, at CES. “That will be the big news at E3.”<\/p>\n
With the Wii U already confirmed for launch sometime this year, that means Sony or Microsoft. Unless Nintendo really is planning on a major shocker during their keynote presentation, and cancelling the Wii U. Probably not, though.<\/p>\n
It’s also not very likely to be Sony, for that matter. At CES, Sony under-boss Kaz Hirai confirmed that the company wasn’t ready to move over to a network gaming service.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s very important that we continue to have a dedicated home-based console,\u201d he said. \u201cRelying solely on networks to deliver content is unfortunately just not possible. It\u2019s still very difficult to have consumers download 50 gigabytes of data or more.\u201d<\/p>\n
Which leaves Microsoft. Which also seems a bit unlikely, given that rumours of a next-gen Xbox already being in the hands of developers have been going around forever now; and where there’s smoke, there’s usually a Microsoft console.<\/p>\n
Mind you, this is just Reeves speculating, and not actually a Fact-Truth, so make of it what you will.<\/p>\n
