What’s the world record for the most number of players in a single online FPS game? As of right now, it’s 999 – a new record set over the past weekend with indie dev MuchDifferent’s meat-shooter, Man Vs. Machine.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was amazing. We did not imagine the amount of interest that this game would generate, so the system went down shortly after we had reached the peak of 999 players,” said MuchDifferent boss,\u00a0 Christian L\u00f6nnhold. “Within minutes we were able to adjust it, and the battle continued for about two hours more. Almost until the end we were averaging around 980 players at any given moment. It was a blast!\u201d<\/p>\n

The browser-based game is powered by MuchDifferent’s own PikkoServer technology, which you can read all about over here<\/a> (Warning: jargon and maths). Gamers from all over the planet signed up to take part in the event, which was the first test of the server tech at this scale.<\/p>\n

“We believe this technology can be applied to just about any game engine used today,” said L\u00f6nnholm. “So, our goal now is to make this technology available to developers worldwide. Stay tuned!\u201d<\/p>\n
