A team of avid Lord of the Rings fans have come together to work on a project they have called MERP or the Middle Earth Role-Playing Project – a mod that would recreate the Tolkien world in Oblivion’s framework. Shockingly, six-year-old games still have a place in modern society and aren’t taboo to write about, let alone still make mods for.<\/p>\n
And now that Skyrim is out and about, with Steam Workshop and Creation Kit at-hand – the team are looking to carry the in-progress mod over to the new Skyrim engine; something that they say they’ve been “preparing” for.<\/p>\n
Currently on version 0.2.6 beta, the mod essentially recreates the story of the ring-bearer, with players being able to choose from ten playable races ranging from elves, hobbits, dwarves and men.<\/p>\n
The folk at MERP say that their goal as a team is to realise the world of JRR Tolkien as closely as they can.<\/p>\n
Their website at MODDB says that they are looking for volunteers who can work with the construction set, artists and 3D designers as well as composers.<\/p>\n
Whether this charming and ambitious mod will ever really see the light of day or waft off into obscurity remains to be seen. But let’s be optimistic, wish them luck – because it would be pretty damn cool to see.<\/p>\n
