{"id":34058,"date":"2012-03-13T14:57:40","date_gmt":"2012-03-13T12:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=34058"},"modified":"2012-03-13T15:02:42","modified_gmt":"2012-03-13T13:02:42","slug":"send-free-smses-from-gmail-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/business\/34058-send-free-smses-from-gmail-in-south-africa","title":{"rendered":"Send free SMSes from Gmail in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A number of South African users have reported receiving a new pop-up message in Gmail telling them that they are able to send <a title=\"SMS\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/289539-SMS-Short-Message-Service\">SMSes<\/a> from <a title=\"Google\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/314567-Google\">Google<\/a> Chat.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa is not listed among the countries supported by the service, but our own testing revealed that <a title=\"8ta\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/276092-8ta\">8ta<\/a> and <a title=\"MTN\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/226943-MTN\">MTN<\/a> numbers could receive messages sent from Google Chat.<\/p>\n<p>Replies sent from these networks to Google Chat also appeared in Gmail\u2019s chat interface.<\/p>\n<p>Attempts to send messages to <a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227063-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a> and <a title=\"Cell C\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/213919-Cell-C\">Cell C<\/a> returned an error message from Google saying that the number \u201cis on a mobile carrier that is not supported at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MTN and Vodacom have networks in countries such as Uganda, Ghana, and Congo that Google lists as supported. Google has offered this service from as early as 2008, but these are the first reports of it working on South African networks.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45598\" style=\"width: 559px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45598\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45598\" title=\"Gmail free SMS popup\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Gmail-free-SMS-popup.jpg\" alt=\"Gmail free SMS popup\" width=\"549\" height=\"223\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gmail free SMS popup<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Google gives users 50 free SMS credits, with each message you send costing one credit.<\/p>\n<p>If your SMS credit reaches zero at any point, Google says you will get one credit 24 hours later to ensure that you won\u2019t be locked out of the system.<\/p>\n<p>To \u201cbuy\u201d more credits you just need to receive messages via SMS.
