{"id":3488,"date":"2009-02-08T22:26:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-08T20:26:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T22:00:00","slug":"ps3-hits-20million-mark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/playstation\/3488-ps3-hits-20million-mark","title":{"rendered":"PS3 hits 20million mark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.vgchartz.com\/news.php?id=2954\" target=\"_blank\">VGchartz<\/a>, as of January 31 2009, Sony has sold 20.07million PlayStation 3 consoles worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The time taken to reach the milestone varies per region, as the PS3 was launched at different times in different areas.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands now, the PS3 has been around for 98 weeks in Europe, 115 weeks in the Americas, 117 weeks in Japan and up to 116 weeks in other markets.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of units sold worldwide were either sold in Europe, the Americas or Japan, with just 1.42million PS3s being sold outside these regions.<\/p>\n<p>Europe has been the PS3&rsquo;s most popular region, pushing 8.054million consoles, followed by the Americas (mainly USA and Canada) at 7.754million and Japan which saw 2.841million units sold.<\/p>\n<p>Bear in mind that these figures are closely tied to the number of people living in the respective regions.<\/p>\n<p>If we compare the PS3&rsquo;s sales figures to the sales figures of other consoles at the same time in their lifespan, we discover that the PS3 is actually ahead of the Xbox 360.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Europe <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After 98 weeks (PS3 lifespan to date) &#8211; PS3 8.054million, Xbox 360 3.343million, Wii 11.229million<br \/><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Americas <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After 115 weeks (PS3 lifespan to date) &ndash; PS3 7.754million, Xbox 360 10.537million, Wii 20.995million <br \/><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Japan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After 117 weeks (PS3 lifespan to date) &ndash; PS3 2.841million, Xbox 360 0.587million, Wii 7.8million (has not been available 117 weeks in Japan).<br \/><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Total sales in three primary regions after comparable life span:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wii 40.024million, PS3 18.649million, Xbox 360 14.467million.<\/p>\n<p>The Nintendo Wii vastly outsold both the PS3 and Xbox 360 at comparable points in its lifespan, but that goes without saying.<\/p>\n<p>While the Xbox 360 managed to outsell the PS3 in the Americas, Europe and Japan are a different story.<\/p>\n<p>The PS3 has sold around 4million more consoles in these primary regions than the Xbox 360 had when it was at the same point in its life span.<\/p>\n<p>This is an impressive feet, considering the PS3 is sold at a significantly higher price point than the Xbox 360.<\/p>\n<p>The Xbox 360 is currently sitting on 28.15million sales worldwide; about 8million sales ahead of Sony&rsquo;s console. However, Microsoft&rsquo;s console has been around for around a year longer than the PS3, and according to these figures, the PS3 is catching up.<\/p>\n<p>2008 was a very close year in terms of console sales.
