Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions (2010) Xbox 360, PS3<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spiderman has had his fair share of video games over years. While they have generally turned out\u2026 okay, none had managed to capture the depth and variety that the multiple Spiderman universes have to offer.<\/p>\n

That was until we got Shattered Dimensions. An ancient tablet is accidentally broken in half by none other than Spidey himself. Each piece of the tablet is distributed into four different dimensions, namely Amazing, Ultimate, 2099 and Noir.<\/p>\n

Each dimension\u2019s Spider-man now has to fight in order to regain possession of the tablet and reset the natural balance of things, but with enemies such as Hobgoblin, Hammerhead and Kraven holding these pieces, it\u2019s quite the challenge for ol\u2019 Webhead.<\/p>\n

While Spiderman\u2019s previous game, Web of Shadows, showed what an open-world adventure could do for the hero, Shattered Dimensions showed what a more focused and direct story-driven game can achieve. While the game might have its shortcomings, it\u2019s definitely one of the best Spidey games out there.<\/p>\n

Batman: Arkham City (2011) Xbox 360, PS3, PC<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the fantastic Arkham Asylum was the precursor to one of the best games of 2011, Arkham City was where Rocksteady really hit home. The larger open-world environment, which branched out of Gotham\u2019s infamous prison and into a large portion of Gotham itself, gave players an unparalleled sense of freedom with the Dark Knight.<\/p>\n

Improving on the first title, enemy AI got a good upgrade and the repetitive gargoyle-lined rooms which made enemy encounters predictable were turned upside-down. Each situation and location posed a new challenge in Arkham City, and the boss battles were some of the most memorable of the year.<\/p>\n

X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Uncaged Edition (2009) PS3, Xbox 360<\/strong><\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the PG-13 Wolverine you\u2019ve seen in the films. The lame \u201cUncaged\u201d subtitle represents the ultimate, goriest, uncensored and most brutally beautiful violence and dismemberment you\u2019ve ever laid your uncorrupted eyes on. After all, this was from the guys who made Soldier of Fortune.<\/p>\n

For example, Wolverine regularly tears helicopter-pilots through their windscreen and shoves their soon-to-be decapitated heads into the spinning blades. I think they captured his true personality.<\/p>\n

X-Men Origins: Wolverine combines platforming, puzzles and most importantly, combat. Wolverine is ultimately a \u2018kill-all-ask-questions-later\u2019 kinda guy; therefore the hack-and-slash elements of the game fit the overall purpose and intent pretty well.<\/p>\n

The game showed what super-hero games should be all about. Not becoming too attached to its cinematic counterpart and instead incorporating Wolverine\u2019s comic-book brutality and animalistic attributes is what made the game exceed expectations.<\/p>\n

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Uncaged Edition<\/p><\/div>\n

InFamous 2 (2011) PS3<\/strong><\/p>\n

While not based on any pre-existing fiction, InFamous 2 holds strong as one of the best superhero games, and possibly, one of the best superhero stories. Elements of the game were stylised as if in homage to its comic book inspirations.<\/p>\n

Like Arkham City, InFamous 2 improved on Cole McGrath\u2019s first adventure \u2013 an origin story about a bike courier who gains electrical powers after a bomb blast.<\/p>\n

The game features diverse and more varying missions, which revolve around mutations breaking out and mysterious creatures roaming the city. Cole is still coming to terms with his new-found powers, and must make some hefty decisions which have some drastic results throughout the game.<\/p>\n

InFamous 2 manages to deliver a strong open-world action game, but more importantly, uses a gameplay karma system to engage the player in what it would be like to suddenly gain super powers, and deal with the consequences that follow.<\/p>\n
