Earlier today, Funcom, who is responsible for the MMORPG Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, declared a fourth quarter loss of $23 million, and registered a total $33.8 million down the drain for 2008.<\/p>\n
It is hardly surprising then that Funcom’s chief financial officer, Olav Sandness resigned from the company. He is not the first employee to go, with AOE’s game director Gaute Godager leaving in September last year, citing general dissatisfaction with the game as his primary reason for leaving.<\/p>\n
Shortly after its highly anticipated release, Age of Conan peaked at 700 000 subscribers. Unfortunately, the game did not have what was required of it hold onto its user base. Just a month ago, Funcom shut down 31 of its 49 servers, leaving the MMO with just 18 operating realms.<\/p>\n
It is estimated that Age of Conan is now sitting with less than 100 000 active subscribers. A pale comparison to World of Warcraft’s staggering 11.5 million active user base.<\/p>\n
