The Xbox 360<\/a> continues to trump the PS3<\/a> in sales month after month, and many analysts have been calling for a PS3 price cut in order to try and slow Microsoft\u2019s<\/a> momentum. Even the mighty overlord of the gaming analyst industry Michael Pachter<\/a> said so, and no one would ever argue with him.<\/p>\n

Unless you\u2019re Jesse Divnich<\/a> of EEDAR<\/a> of course. Divnich thinks the whole thing is blown well out of proportion, and while sales may be lagging behind Microsoft, they\u2019re exactly where they should be for an aging console in its twilight years.<\/p>\n

“I don’t believe the PlayStation 3 needs a price drop at the moment,” he said. “Sales have been consistent and in-line to what one would expect for a platform that continues to successfully grow its install base so late in a console cycle.”<\/p>\n

A recent PS3 price cut by Gamestop caused a bit of a stir, but Sony was quick to point out that this was a Gamestop promotion and had nothing to do with them. Divnich also thinks nothing of it.<\/p>\n

“There could be many elements at play, but I highly doubt this is any indication of weakness for the PlayStation 3,” he said.<\/p>\n

With the Wii U\u2019s release on the horizon, it\u2019s likely both consoles should be considering a price cut pretty soon. With Nintendo<\/a> offering something brand new and shiny, the long in the tooth competition will have to concede a little bit of price point, especially considering both companies have said their next-gen stuff isn\u2019t arriving anytime soon.<\/p>\n
