In a massive blow to Brits who hate paying for things, UK internet service providers have been issued with a court order to block access to Swedish torrent portal The Pirate Bay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These ISPs include Sky, Everything Everywhere, TalkTalk, O2 and Virgin Media, all of which are legally prohibited from allowing their customers access to the site.<\/p>\n

This was set in motion by the British Phonographic Industry, who last November asked the ISPs to block the website voluntarily. All of them refused, saying they would not do so without a court order\u2026 I think you can guess what happened next.<\/p>\n

BPI\u2019s CEO Geoff Taylor said, “The High Court has confirmed that The Pirate Bay infringes copyright on a massive scale,\u201d presumably while doing a victory dance.<\/p>\n

“Its operators line their pockets by commercially exploiting music and other creative works without paying a penny to the people who created them.<\/p>\n

“This is wrong – musicians, sound engineers and video editors deserve to be paid for their work just like everyone else.”<\/p>\n

Virgin Media made a statement regarding the ban, saying that they planned on following the orders but weren\u2019t happy about it.<\/p>\n

“As a responsible ISP, Virgin Media complies with court orders addressed to the company but strongly believes that changing consumer behaviour to tackle copyright infringement also needs compelling legal alternatives, such as our agreement with Spotify, to give consumers access to great content at the right price,” a spokesperson explained.<\/p>\n

Minecraft creator Markus \u201cNotch\u201d Persson<\/a> strongly and vocally opposed the ban, even going so far as to post a link on his Twitter which provides instructions on how to get around the block. He also attached a request, \u201cplease don\u2019t pirate Minecraft.\u201d<\/p>\n

However he later went on to say, “Although if pirating Minecraft helps ensure the bastards don’t get to censor the net, pirate it all you want.”<\/p>\n

While The Pirate Bay always seems to get the brunt of this kind of attention, there are plenty of other massive torrent websites out there, and blocking access to one seems futile in an attempt to combat piracy. What\u2019s your opinion \u2013 censorship or crime prevention?<\/p>\n
