Over the past few days rumors have been circulating online reporting that Sony is planning on making a big announcement today. Various web sites have speculated that Sony’s big announcement will be a price cut on the PS3.<\/p>\n

It is not the first time that rumors of this nature have surfaced.  Two weeks ago it was alleged that Sony was going to reduce their 80GB console’s price tag<\/a> over the weekend. The price-cut never came, but it has not stopped industry analysts, gamers and journalists alike from speculating as to when Sony will reduce the price of the PS3.<\/p>\n

Kotaku<\/a> revealed over the weekend that Sony had informed them that they will be making a big announcement come Tuesday. This led to various educated guesses within the gaming community, the number one candidate being the long awaited PS3 price cut of $100.<\/p>\n

The console manufacturer came forward yesterday and officially stated that there is no planned price cut for the PS3, effectively crushing the rumor. However, that is not to say that today’s announcement will not include a price cut on another of Sony’s consoles. While Sony has made it perfectly clear that the announcement will not be in regards to any change in the PS3’s price tag, they did not deny rumors of a PS2 price cut.<\/p>\n

A possible PS2 price cut was given credence by a tipoff received by Kotaku. According to a source at Kmart, the PS2 will be reduced to $100 in the coming week.<\/p>\n

The idea that Sony will reduce the price tag of the PS2 is being fuelled more by what the console maker is not saying than what they have already said. We now know the announcement will not be a reduction to the PS3 price, but Sony said nothing of the PS2 price reduction rumors.<\/p>\n

As Expected, Sony has announced that the PS2’s price will be reduced from $129 to $99.<\/p>\n
