A crackdown on pirates has been happening globally recently, and I don\u2019t mean the Somalian Jack Sparrow variety.<\/p>\n
The notorious torrent portal The Pirate Bay has been blocked by UK ISPs following a court order. The site is also banned in Holland, and previously a Dutch group calling themselves The Pirate Party has posted various methods on the internet for circumventing the ban. However, a court order has now put a stop to that too, forcing the Party to take down all their various tricks.<\/p>\n
This court ruling is the result of a complaint from Brein, an anti-piracy group. Predictably, the Pirate Party prattled on about censorship, pretending The Pirate Bay deals with open-source software and fluffy kittens.<\/p>\n
“The judge decided to give the Netherlands another nudge on the gliding scale of censorship,” they posted on their site.<\/p>\n
“More and more bits of the internet will have to be censored because they might be used to get access to ‘infringing’ sites, until eventually most of the internet will be unreachable.”<\/p>\n
In the meantime, the Pirate Party has also set up in the UK, to counter the various ISP bans. That particular proxy remains intact, for now.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s popular too – \u201ccampaigns officer\u201d Andy Halsall said the site received two million hits in 24 hours. The Dutch proxy service was also shut down by the court.<\/p>\n
The people who championed the UK ban, the British Phonographic Institute, have yet to comment on whether or not they plan to lodge another complaint against the British arm of The Pirate Party.<\/p>\n
