The original Bioshock remains one of the most well received video games yet released. Although it does have its detractors, it cannot be denied that the game stands head and shoulders above its contemporaries, at least in terms of story, emersion, depth and conceptual originality.<\/p>\n
One of its greatest shortcomings however, and on this point we can agree, is that it is an exclusively single player experience.<\/p>\n
Fortunately, 2K Games announced a few months ago that Bioshock 2 will include a fully functional and developed multiplayer component. Not satisfied with simply tacking on a couple of generic deathmatch style multiplayer maps, the developer looks to be aiming to create an experience that is as unique and engaging as its single player component.<\/p>\n
According to Shacknews<\/a>, 2K Games has made a few announcements regarding the nature of Bioshock 2’s multiplayer.<\/p>\n – Multiplayer participants will take on the role of plasmid test subjects. The multiplayer component will be set in a time before Rapture falls into chaos.<\/p>\n – There will be a complex point system. Players will be able to unlock new weapons and upgrade their abilities using different plasmids. It is not clear at this point if abilities and upgrades are carried through different multiplayer instances (CoD 4), or if each match will have players starting from scratch.<\/p>\n – Multiplayer maps will be fully reworked rapture locations.<\/p>\n – 2K has gotten Digital Extremes on board to develop the multiplayer. Digital Extremes is no stranger to AAA multiplayer gaming, and co-produced the first three Unreal Tournament games.<\/p>\n
