Telkom’s better, faster broadband network<\/h3>\n

Telkom\u2019s<\/a> first MSANs<\/a> are already live, serving well over a thousand of Telkom\u2019s fixed line broadband subscribers. Over the next few months thousands more of Telkom\u2019s ADSL<\/a> customers will be migrated to this new high speed broadband network.<\/p>\n

In March 2012, Telkom officially announced they had begun rolling out 3,700 multi-service access nodes (MSANs) that will replace 2,700 older generation cabinets and add another 1,000 to their number.<\/p>\n

MSANs can be used to offer higher speed ADSL (ADSL 2+), very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL)<\/a>, and fibre-to-the-home (FTTH)<\/a> services.<\/p>\n

These new cabinets can offer speeds of up to 1Gbps using fibre as the last mile, or up to 40Mbps using Telkom\u2019s existing last-mile copper infrastructure, Samuels said. Each cabinet can handle 370 to 600 connections, depending on the ports activated.<\/p>\n

Telkom uncapped ADSL is a hit<\/h3>\n

Telkom<\/a> said that its uncapped ADSL<\/a> service was a successful initiative, and at 31 March 2012 they had signed up 35,093 uncapped ADSL customers.<\/p>\n

Telkom launched its first uncapped ADSL services in 2011, partly because of competitive pressure from Internet Service Providers such as MWEB<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Telkom CEO Nombulelo Moholi<\/a> highlighted that the company will increase ADSL speeds starting in August 2012, and that it plans to boost entry level speeds to 2Mbps and increase top speed to 40Mbps by 2015.<\/p>\n

On 8 June 2012, Telkom announced its annual results for the year ended 31 March 2012.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

During her presentation, CEO Nombulelo Moholi<\/a> said that Telkom<\/a> will be re-positioning its fibre portfolio to make it cheaper and easier for its customers to access fibre services to satisfy their growing demand for bandwidth.<\/p>\n

Moholi said that the company will be consolidating its position as a telecom wholesaler of choice, boasting the strongest fibre network in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Telkom is planning to revamp its access network, leveraging fibre-to-the-premise (FTTx)<\/a> to support \u201csuper fast quality broadband\u201d.<\/p>\n

The company is further aiming to enhance its core network, boosting customers\u2019 online experience and laying the foundation for fixed-mobile convergence.<\/p>\n

Moholi said that customers can expect to see pre-packed and tailor made fixed-mobile packages from Telkom this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will allow customers to choose between basic, advanced, premium or customised converged voice and data deals with a compelling value proposition,\u201d said Moholi.<\/p>\n
