A CHALLENGER APPEARS! And it’s probably the last thing anybody might have expected – a cheap, Android-based console that comes packed with a devkit and the rights to self-publish, and a feature list that includes hardware “built to be hacked” and an entirely free-to-play catalogue.<\/p>\n
The console has just been announced by Ouya, a new Los Angeles startup backed by Xbox co-creator Ed Fries, Amazon Kindle man Muffi Ghadiali, One Laptop Per Child designer Yves B\u00e9har, and IGN’s Julie Uhrman.<\/p>\n
Not much else about the console has been made public just yet, although it’s been confirmed that it will plug into TVs, and retail at just $99 (around R800 or so). Being built on Android, it’s likely that most games will be more casually-oriented, but considering what developers are already doing in the mobile space, you never know what you might get in the future.<\/p>\n
Also, the console looks like some kind of extraterrestrial artefact from a superhero movie, so that’s pretty cool too.<\/p>\n
