Research firm NPD has released exclusive sales information to Gamasutra<\/a> detailing the top selling console games of 2009 so far.<\/p>\n

Top selling console games of 2009 so far:

PS3<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.    Killzone 2<\/p>\n

It is no surprise that the most hyped PS3 exclusive yet to be released occupies the top spot on Sony’s list. Having sold an estimated 750,000 copies since its release in February, Sony’s self published first person shooter is a testament to the ‘sales-bump’ effect brought on by console exclusivity.<\/p>\n

2.    Resident Evil V<\/p>\n

Capcom’s survival horror built on the pedigree of a long standing franchise.  The fifth release in the world’s biggest zombie shooter series has become the top selling Resident Evil Game released to date.<\/p>\n

3.    Street Fighter IV<\/p>\n

Another Capcom title that cashes in on its cult-franchise status, Street Fighter IV is also Metacritic’s most highly rated console game of 2009 so far.<\/p>\n

4.    UFC 09: Undisputed<\/p>\n

By Gamasutra’s estimation, UFC 09 has sold in excess of 500,000 units since its release in March. UFC 09 is a solid fighting title from THQ, combining action and simulation, the game managed to hit all the right chords at retail.<\/p>\n

5.    MLB ’09: The Show<\/p>\n

Another PS3 exclusive published  by Sony, MLB 09 is a baseball game and is estimated to have sold around 425,000 units.<\/p>\n

Xbox 360<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.    Resident Evil V<\/p>\n

Not content with second and third place on the PS3 chart, Capcom takes top honors on the Xbox 360 list, having sold over 1,000,000 units since its release in March. Interestingly, the Xbox 360 version of resident Evil V is estimated to have outsold the PS3 version by around 400,000 units this year, a sign to publishers that the Xbox 360 is clearly a more profitable console.<\/p>\n

2.    UFC 2009: Undisputed<\/p>\n

Another title that did very well in PS3 format, THQ’s wrestling title has sold an estimated 1,000,000 units on Microsoft’s console, again outselling the PS3 release significantly.<\/p>\n

3.    Call of Duty: World at War<\/p>\n

A surprise entry at number 3, Activision’s fifth Call of Duty game was released late in 2008 yet it manages to take the third spot in 2009’s highest sales list.<\/p>\n

4.    Halo Wars 500,00 – 700,000<\/p>\n

The only Xbox 360 exclusive to make the top 5 cut for Microsoft, Halo Wars was well received, showing that real time strategy does not only play well on a console, but it can also sell well, especially when it is backed by one of the biggest gaming franchises around. Gamasutra estimates between 500,000 and 700,000 units sold.<\/p>\n

5.    Street Fighter IV<\/p>\n

Another parallel seen between the Xbox 360 and PS3, Street Fighter IV is estimated to have sold between 500,000 and 700,000 units.<\/p>\n

In total, 3 of the top 5 selling games of 2009 so far have appeared on both the PS3 and Xbox 360. Sony has done well with its exclusives with two making the top five, and Call of Duty: World at War entering the ranking  as a wild card and continuing to sell very well following the year of its release.<\/p>\n
