Nintendo has released its first quarterly (April-June) financial report for 2010 ( the fiscal year for 2010 begins in April 2009 and ends March 31 2010). Compared to the same period last year, net profits for the Wii and DS developer have fallen 60% and sales are down around 40%.<\/p>\n
Nintendo also released its official sales reports, indicating a total of 6,680,000 DSis and 52,620,000 Wiis have been sold to date.
Between April and June in 2008 Nintendo netted $4.4 billion. In the same period this year the company raised just $2.6 billion.<\/p>\n
Nintendo secured net profits during this period in 2009 of $442 million. The same period last year yielded profits close to $1 billion.<\/p>\n
While Nintedo has attributed the depreciation of the Yen to the decline in sales, it must also be noted that 2009 has been a relatively quiet year in terms of software releases for the Wii. The same period last year saw titles such as Wii Fit and Mario Kart being released, which boosted sales of the console dramatically. There have not been any runaway Wii title successes in 2009 yet, at least none that compare to the likes of Wii Fit.<\/p>\n
The first fiscal quarter (April-June) of 2010 may have yielded far lower profits than the same period last year, but it must be said that fiscal year 2009 (April 08- April 09) saw the company achieve record profits. Nintendo managed to sell around 26 million Wiis during the fiscal year, accounting for around half of the total Wii sales to date. Nintendo grossed $18.5 billion over the fiscal year, and secured net profits of $2.8 billion.<\/p>\n
While 2009 has been slow for the Wii so far, the release of Wii Sports Resort is expected to boost sales, as like Wii Fit, it is aimed at a mainstream casual gaming audience.<\/p>\n
