<\/p>\nFor months now rumors have been circulating that Sony is planning to drop the price of the Playstation 3 console. At $400 (R3200) it is the most expensive console on the market, a fact which has been at the center of numerous discussions.<\/p>\n
At $400 many argue that Sony has priced the PS3 at a point which makes it unable to compete with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sales, but the company has remained tight lipped on its pricing, stating only that its product is worth the investment.<\/p>\n
The idea of an 80GB PS3 for R3200 would be music to the ears of any South African gamer, with local pricing being closer to the R5000 mark due to import taxes, shipping costs and of course local distributer and retailer markups. Still, the $400 price point has been a point of contention, and is the most likely reason for the PS3 not matching Xbox 360 sales.<\/p>\n
While Sony has not formally announced a price cut, many American retailers have slashed $100 off both the 80GB (was $400 now $300) as well as the 160GB (was $500 now $400).<\/p>\n
